A Scottish Tradition: The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the many highlights in Scotland every year for both locals and foreigners. Such a wonderful experience that PerryGolf recommends attending the event to clients who have always agreed that it’s a truly worthwhile and memorable experience to tie in with their August golf vacation. Mr. Chuck Battey, a multi-year past client of PerryGolf who has taken golf vacations with PerryGolf nearly everywhere: Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales, New Zealand and Australia said,
“Our final evening [attending this event] was truly special. Keith Baird of PerryGolf recommended we attend The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo located in a temporary stadium right in front of the Royal Castle (seats 8800)…One of the best we have ever experienced.”
This special experience, held every August in Edinburgh, Scotland, was formerly known as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo until it received the Royal title from HM Queen Elizabeth in 2010. It is an annual series of Military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams.
The event takes place on the esplanade next to the Edinburgh Castle and compliments the Edinburgh Festival – the numerous independent festivals and events during August in Edinburgh. The temporary grandstands seat nearly 9,000 people, but some 217,000 attend the event over its 3 week duration every year; tickets to attend are always sold out well in advance, so it’s important to plan ahead. If you’re traveling with PerryGolf around this time, be sure to mention your interest in attending so we may get tickets for you. It isn’t just Scots that attend this two hour long nightly military performance either, in fact only about 30% are Scottish, 35% are from elsewhere in the British Isles, and 30% are from overseas.
The event had a great turnout and will go down in the books as yet another success. Performances included the Scottish army bands as well as guests from New Zealand, Mexico, England and Mongolia. The grand finale was elaborate and anything but shy of magnificent. It included multiple songs from all of the events’ performers, the National Anthem “God Save the Queen”, and a fabulous performance of the Scottish ballad Auld Lang Syne topped off with a breathtaking display of fireworks.

Airfare Exclusive: How To Combine First Class and WT+ for a Great Fare
PerryGolf can provide in house air travel assistance for our clients as they prepare for their international vacations. Very often the air travel options can be somewhat bewildering – given the myriad of routing options, airfares, cabin configurations, loyalty programs, and lounge accesses – while trying to coordinate at the same airport, similar arrival and departure times of each member of your group.

Playing the Old Course at St Andrews in 2014
As sure as the summer begins to draw to a close, it is almost time to start making plans for next summer and securing a tee time on the Old Course at St Andrews. As I have written previously, with a thorough explanation about how to play the Old Course, the early September deadline is drawing closer.
One minor, but significantly helpful change has been moving the opening time for applications from 10am in Scotland (5 am on the East Coast) to 2pm (a more agreeable 9am on the East Coast!).
With the Ryder Cup in Scotland in 2014 and the Open Championship returning to the Old Course in 2015, I think it is fair to assume that demand to play at the “Home of Golf” will continue to far outstrip available supply, thus appropriate planning is the order of the day and now is the time to get commitments from your prospective travel partners.
